I am describing how to set up Aptana Studio 3 with Django. I had to decide among a multitude of different development environments (IDE for Integrated Development Environment). My choice fell on Aptana Studion 3 as it integrates quite nicely with Python, Django and offers text highlighting for Javascript, HTML and CSS (all that besides being open source).  Please note that I am using Windows 7 and will describe the installation process on this system.

Install  Python & Django
First of all we need to install Python on the system. Django is currently not working with Python 3.x so we have to install the 2.x version which is supported from version 2.4. At time of writing the most current version of Python is 2.7.2. Download the latest Windows Python installer from the Python website. Launch the installer and install Python. For some additional information on how to install Python on Windows and configure specific characteristics see the Python Documentation.

To install Django you need to download the latest version from the Django Project website (at time of writing the latest official version is 1.3.1). Now, unpack the .tar file (for example with a tool like 7-zip) into a folder. Now open a command prompt window with administrator rights and navigate to the the folder where we have unpacked the Django files. As a reminder, below two useful commands for navigating a command prompt:
  • - cd Foldername Navigates to the folder named "Foldername"
  • - cd..  - Navigates to the folder above the current folder
  • - dir - shows all the folders in the current directory

Once you are in the Django folder type in the following command to start the installation:

  • - python setup.py install

This should install Django within Python's site-packages folder. For further information on installing Django check Django's Quick Installation Guide (for Django version 1.3).

Install Aptana Studio 3
Aptana Studio 3 already includes PyDev for programming in Python. Since Django includes the SQLite 3 database engine, we will be all set to run a simple Django application. To install Aptana Studio 3, download the installer and run the Setup.exe file. The rest of the installation process is pretty straight forward.

After installing Aptana Sudio 3, the Python path needs to be set. Access the preferences under the top bar menu "Window" > "Preferences". As shown in the picture below, select the "Interpreter - Python" menu under "PyDev". You will have to set the Pythonpath, i.e. the path to your python.exe file. You can do this automatically by selecting the "Auto Config" button. In case this does not work, you can manually navigate to your Python installation using the "New" button.
